Qatar Airways has been named the Official Airline Partner for the Qatar-India Year of Culture 2019.

This development marks the beginning of a year-long collaboration that will see both nations jointly celebrate their unique cultural legacies.

Developed by Qatar Museums, the Qatar-India Year of Culture 2019 will invite audiences in both Qatar and India to explore their cultural heritage through an exciting array of programmes, including a variety of Qatari-Indian exhibitions, musical performances, fashion, film and artistic events.

The Year of Culture programme, developed under the patronage of chairperson, Qatar Museums, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has continued to grow each passing year, with the Qatar-Russia Year of Culture 2018 programme being the largest cultural collaboration to date.

“We are delighted to be the Official Airline Partner of the Qatar-India Year of Culture 2019, taking place in both Qatar and India,” chief executive, Qatar Airways Group, HE Akbar Al Baker remarked. “As an airline, we believe that culture is a universal connector that brings people together, and this year-long event will enable both societies to share a mutual path of understanding and appreciation of each other.”

In Qatar, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the Year of Culture experience at the Doha International Book Fair 2019, where India will be the Guest of Honour. Other highlights include an exhibition by Raqs Media Collective, which makes contemporary art, edits books and curates exhibitions, and a ‘Festival of India’ event that will feature a range of visual arts and performances, such as classical dance and music (both Indian and Western), as well as cinema and theatre.

Key events to look forward to in India include ‘The Monsoon Wedding’ musical and a contemporary Art Qatar Exhibition – a landmark exhibition showcasing Qatar’s rapid, social and urban transformation through the eyes of talented emerging artists from the country.

Acting CEO, Qatar Museums, Ahmad Al Namla said: “Since its conception, the Years of Culture programme has been building bridges between Qatar and the world, celebrating both our similarities as well as our differences.

“After several successful editions, we are pleased to launch Qatar-India Year of Culture 2019. Our two countries have long enjoyed a close partnership, one that extends beyond economic ties. Our aspiration is that the Year of Culture programme will further strengthen our existing ties, encourage new encounters, and spur creativity and curiosity among the new generations of both countries,” he concluded.

The Global Airport Leaders’ Forum (GALF) has unveiled a revamped agenda for its seventh edition in Dubai in 2019, reflecting the changing aviation landscape and future technologies.

Key airport industry decision makers will flock to Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre (DICEC) for the three-day forum, taking place from April 29 to May 1, 2019.

This year’s theme will be ‘Leading Collaborative Sustainable Aviation Growth’, reflecting the future growth path of the industry which supports $2.7 trillion of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and carries over four billion passengers and 62 million tonnes of freight a year.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects 7.8 billion passengers by 2036, almost double the current numbers, and airports and airlines will have to adopt smart technologies rapidly to cater to this unprecedented growth volume.

Concurrently, the Middle East is expected to welcome 517 million passengers by 2036, and 450 million passengers by the Arabian Gulf airports, including over 100 million passengers in Dubai, by 2020.

GALF is a pivotal moment in the year where industry leaders and experts from around the world will gather to discuss common challenges, partnership opportunities and chart the way forward for the region’s aviation growth. Topics will include Smart Airports and Sustainability, Airport Privatisation Models, Building Non-Aeronautical Revenue Systems and the Future of Blockchain in Aviation, amongst others.

The Forum will highlight the most influential innovations that are shaping the design, features and day-to-day operations of the modern airport. One of the key topics, Blockchain, is a market that will be worth $23 billion by 2023. Dubai has ambitious plans to be the world’s first city fully powered by blockchain by 2020 and the emirate is making persistent efforts to be a global leader in blockchain adoption.

Another key topic will be smart airports. The global smart airport market is expected to reach close to $13 billion by 2019 and $14.87 billion by 2021. Like Blockchain, Smart airports are currently at a developing stage but will grow at a healthy rate in the coming decade. In the Middle East, the smart airports market will be worth $850 million by 2019. Airports in the UAE are leading the way when it comes to smart technology adoption and key features of the future smart airport will be discussed at GALF.

Emirates Airline has adjusted its 2019 schedule to ensure smooth operations during the year and also during the closure of Dubai International Airport’s Southern Runway between April 16 and May 30.

President, Emirates Airline, Sir Tim Clark commented: “At Emirates, we pride ourselves on being a customer-focused airline with a commercially-driven business model. We invest in a modern and efficient aircraft fleet so we can offer industry-leading comforts to our customers, and we are agile in deploying our aircraft to destinations where it best serves customer demand.

“The changes we are implementing to our network schedules in 2019 are in line with this approach, taking into consideration global market dynamics and operational limitations, including the maintenance work on Dubai Airport’s Southern Runway. Through the year, we will continue to keep a close watch on global markets and will maintain our flexibility to optimise the usage of our aircraft assets,” he added.

The adjustments include cancellations, re-timed flights or the changing of aircraft. A total of 48 Emirates Airline aircraft will not being utilised during the runway closure, resulting in a 25 per cent reduction in the overall number of flights operated.

This June, the airline will deploy additional services to various destinations in Africa. Cities in Africa that will be served by additional flights include Casablanca and Morocco, with a second daily flight starting on June 1, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER; Abuja, Nigeria, with three additional flights per week as of June 1, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER; and Accra, Ghana, with four additional Boeing 777-300ER flights a week as of June 2. Adding to this, the airline is boosting flights to Conakry in Guinea and Dakar in Senegal. The capitals of Guinea and Senegal will be serviced by one additional linked flight every week as of June 1. These flights will be operated by a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Moving on, Emirates Airline will be adopting additional flights to Europe during the peak season. The carrier will introduce a second daily flight to Athens, Greece, between March 31 and October 26, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER. Between May 31 until September 31, this route will be operated by a larger Airbus A380 to cater to additional demand. During the period of closure of Dubai Airport’s Southern Runway, the carrier will not operate the second daily flight.

Between March 31 and October 26, Emirates Airline will offer three daily flights to Rome, Italy, serviced by a Boeing 777-300ER. The third flight will be suspended during the Dubai Airport Southern Runway closure.

Other Europe flight updates include an additional flight to Stockholm, Sweden, in July and August, making this route a double-daily Boeing 777-300ER service; and the reintroduction of a daily Boeing 777-300ER service to Zagreb, Croatia, from March 31 until October 26, 2019. The daily service will be reduced to four times a week during the Dubai Airport Southern Runway closure.

Due to increased demand, Emirates Airline will be deploying its larger Airbus A380 aircraft to destinations including: Boston, USA, between June 1 and September 30 and between December 1 and January 31 (2020); as well as Glasgow, UK, between April 16 and May 31.

The carrier will also adjust its services into South America to optimise fleet utilisation. From June 1, the airline will deploy its newly refurbished two-class Boeing 777-200LR on its daily service from Dubai to Rio de Janeiro. This service will continue from Rio de Janeiro to the Argentinian capital city of Buenos Aires four times a week, and on the remaining three days, it will operate onwards to Santiago, Chile. With this change, Emirates Airline will suspend its linked flight from Dubai to Santiago via Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo will continue to be served with a daily non-stop Airbus A380 service to and from Dubai.

From June 1, the airline will suspend flights EK 418/419 between Bangkok and Sydney. It will continue to serve Sydney with three flights a day non-stop to Dubai, and customers wishing to travel between Bangkok and Sydney will have flight choices provided by Emirates Airline’s partner, Qantas.

Finally, as of March 31, Emirates Airline will suspend EK 424/425 and serve Perth with a once daily non-stop Airbus A380 service from Dubai. Customers travelling from Perth will continue to enjoy rapid two-way connections through Dubai to over 38 destinations in Europe, and a further 16 cities in Europe via Emirates Airline’s codeshare partner flydubai. Customers will also be able to enjoy a seamless Emirates A380 experience between Perth and close to 20 destinations in Europe.

Eager to offers its customers a seamless experience, Cyprus Airways has upgraded its passenger reservations system.
